Job Placement & Career Counseling The Placement Office is open throughout the year to provide a broad range of services for undergraduate students, members of the graduating class, recent graduates and alumni. The Office also serves as an important source of information and referrals for prospective employers interested in securing the skills and services of Otis students and alumni. Undergraduates are assisted in obtaining off-campus part- time, freelance and seasonal employment throughout the year as well as on-campus Work Study and student employment in coordination with the Office of Financial Aid. Opportunities for undergraduates include both professional and non-professional positions; referrals are made on the basis of required skills and available time, with the understanding that jobs may not conflict with their class schedules and academic commitments. Graduating Students and Job Placement Throughout the last year, students in the graduating class receive information and counseling on career opportunities, portfolio preparation, resumes, cover letters and employment research. In both seminar groups and individual appointments the students are helped to make the transition from school to professional fields. The Director is available to discuss and help with specific employmentand career related matters of importance to all students, especially at the time of graduation. Starting salaries in the design fields are extremely variable, depending upon the economic conditions, the specific requirements and responsibilities of the position, and the experience of the individual graduate. (Many students work on a freelance basis while in school.) In general, however, the starting salaries are from approximately $9000 to $11,000.
