Communication Design & Illustration The communication arts of illustration, graphic design, advertising, and their related disciplines, comprise an overwhelming majority of the images we encounter in our daily lives. Therefore, the education of professionals, whose understanding of these fields is comprehensive and whose practice of their craft reflects the highest levels of training and skill, is of extreme importance. For the impact of the images created by the communication artist deeply affects the quality of our lives. The combined curriculum of illustration and communication design at Otis/Parsons addresses itself to the problem of developing excellence in tomorrow's generation of professionals.Thecurriculum provides an opportunityforthestudent to explore several directions within this broad area and to concentrate more fully on those that interest him as he moves towards his senioryear. The program is based upon the found- dation skills that form the substance of all visual expression, and some specialization begins in the sophomore year. A high degree of course selectivity is possible at the Junior and Senior level. Art History and Liberal Arts courses are described on pages 9 and 11. Otis faculty are listed on page 14. Art History The History of Art and Design is an important part of the curriculum at Otis. The minimum requirement of two years of art history is based on the conviction that a student can better understand his relation to his own time and the technology at his comand through an awareness of the relationship of his artistic predecessors to their cultural backgrounds and technologies. In the first year a Survey of World Art provides a comprehensive introduction to the works of art and architecture created by human societies on a worldwide basis. In the second year students take courses in specific periods of art history or in the historical background of the studio area in which they are specializing. The Foundation Year course in the Philosophy of Art provides a theoretical basis for the practice of art and an investigation into the natureof aesthetic response. Otis Faculty are listed on page 14. HA100/Survey of World Art A comparative study of art as an expression of human experience in different periods and cultures, ranging from prehistoric to contemporary, from tribal art to the creations of Western and Oriental civilizations at their most complex. The emphasis is on the development of a capacity for perceptive stylistic analysis and an ability to understand the work of art in relation to its cultural context. . |
