Gallery & Exhibition Program The college maintains a large public gallery in which both student and professional work is exhibited. Artists featured in recent years include such figures of international distinction as Robert Motherwell, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre and On Kawara. At the same time, the gallery offers space to artists working in new and experimental modes, along with such diversified offerings as "Drawing Towards a More Modern Architecture" and "Peasant Paintings from the People's Republic of China." Each semester the main gallery exhibits M.F.A. thesis work by graduating students. In addition, a major exhibition of the work of all departments is held each spring. This summing-up allows the faculty and students to evaluate their progress and serves as a review of the year's work. It also allows parents and interested persons to gain a comprehensive view of student achievements in the various programs. The work of the Fashion Design department is presented at a formal fashion show in April or May. Student Activities The student body is organized as an independent corporation. This association's purpose is to enable students to assume the privileges and responsibilities of cooperation with the faculty and administration of the institute, along with the direction and management of student activities and enterprises. The college believes strongly that students should actively participate in school affairs through representation, when appropriate, on academic committees and through active communication with other policy-making groups. The student association's activities include: sponsorship of lecture and film programs; production of publications; student social events; a continuing exhibition of student work in the student lounge; a sale of student work twice annually. Otis Art Associates The Otis Art Associates provide counsel, time, material and financial support to the college. Associates also assist the Institute in the contribution of services to the community and to the world of art. In cooperation with the college's administration, the Board of Directors of the Otis Art Associates determines suitable objectives and projects, such as support of the library, provision of scholarships, funds for student material, and special educational equipment. Of prime importance is the Associates' support otthe various art exhibits presented to the public. Detailed information on membership benefits is available from the Associates' campus office. Student Exchange Programs-New York & Los Angeles Los Angeles and New York Campuses A main feature of the merger between Parsons and Otis is an exchange program of a kind not found in any other art school in the country. Students enrolled at either campus may spend a semester or a year in a comparable program at the other campus. Students who have complete the Foundation Year may participate in exchange programs for a maximum of two semesters. Exchange of students will be limited bv available space in the curriculum of choice. Since there is a tuition differential between the two campuses, the following rule applies: Students at either campus will experience no change in tuition for the first semester of exchange. If the exchange is for two semesters duration (the maximum), the prevailing tuition rate at the exchange campus will be charged for the second semester. With Members of the East Coast Consortium Parsons School of Design participates with 9 other institutions in an informal consortium through which selected students may spend a term at another participating college in the East Coast area. The participating schools include: The Cooper Union School of Art, New York; Hartford School of Art, Hartford; The Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore; Massachusetts College of Art, Boston; School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, Nova Scotia; Philadelphia College of Art, Philadelphia; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn; and Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia. |
