IT MAY BE THAT NO OTHER AGE HAS OFFERED GREATER AND MORE VARIED CHALLENGE TO THE ARTIST THAN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. BY THE SAME TOKEN, NONE HAS REQUIRED GREATER RESPONSIBILITY AND MORE VARIED COMPETENCE. NOT ONLY IS THE OLD BEING REDESIGNED AND THE NEW GIVEN FORM BUT LIKEWISE BOTH ARE UNDERGOING A CONTINUAL PROCESS OF EVALUATION AND CORRELATION. THE TASKS OF THE ARTIST RUN THE GAMUT FROM BOOK ILLUSTRATION TO THE REPLAN- NING OF CITIES. RESPONSIBILITY KEEPS PACE WITH OPPORTUNITY. AS SURELY AS OPPORTUNITIES ARE COMPOUNDED IN AN AGE OF RAPID CHANGE AND TURN-OVER, OF ADJUSTMENT AND INVENTIVENESS, BASIC PRINCIPLES AND DISCIPLINES PERSIST; THEY MUST BE SUBMITTED TO AND MASTERED. ART EDUCATION ENTAILS SPECIALIZED DISCIPLINES. HOWEVER, WE BELIEVE THAT IT IS WITH MAN AS A HUMAN BEING, AS WELL AS A POTENTIAL ARTIST, THAT WE ARE DEALING; THAT OUR RESPONSIBILITY IS PRIMARILY A MATTER OF VALUES AND JUDGMENT, AND SECONDARILY, ONE OF METHODS AND PRACTICES; THAT, WHILE IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A PERSON TO BE EDUCATED AND TRAINED SIMULTANEOUSLY, THE PROCESSES FOLLOWED ARE NOT IDENTICAL. 12 |
