INTRODUCTION Founded in 1918, the Otis Art Institute has now entered the 51st year of its growth. During its first 36 years, in spite of ups and downs, Otis grew to occupy a leading position among western art schools. Its alumni and its teachers contributed vitally to California's artistic growth. In 1954, in keeping with the trend among professional art schools toward the granting of degrees, Otis was reorganized as an upper division and graduate college of art. With the full cooperation of the County's Board of Supervisors the old, original buildings were replaced by the new buildings which now comprise the campus. A new and unique curriculum was established, and Otis entered a new phase of its development. Its students, selectively admitted after completing two years of college elsewhere, must give two additional years to the thorough study of drawing, design, painting, and sculpture, and, during the second year, to basic study of ceramics or printmaking. Upon successfully completing these requirements, students are admitted to graduate study, to spend two more years concentrating their work in the field ^GEO* |
