MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March, 2014 Press Contact: Kathy MacPherson / kmacpherson@otis.edu / (310) 665.6909 Otis College of Art and Design’s Ben Maltz Gallery announces the artists included in Freeway Studies #2: Inside the Quad, an exhibition that continues an extensive survey of the neighborhoods and networks of Los Angeles artists LOS ANGELES, CA – February, 2014 – The Ben Maltz Gallery is proud to announce the upcoming exhibition, Freeway Studies #2: Inside the Quad, on view from April 12 through July 27, 2014. The opening reception is on Saturday, April 12, 4pm-6pm and free to the public. Freeway Studies is a multi-year, contemporary art-focused curatorial project organized by Meg Linton, Director of Galleries and Exhibitions, with the assistance of Jeseca Dawson, 2012-2014 Curatorial Fellow, at the Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design. Rather than the Situationists’ walking exploration of the urban environment, our curatorial dérive—the spontaneous exploration of urban landscapes guided by aesthetic instinct—combines the self-imposed geographic parameters with word-of-mouth referrals. Linton and Dawson traveled the highways to step into artists’ physical work spaces and discover first-hand their ideas and modes of production instead of relying on a mediated experience. Their aim is to broaden the existing conversation about Los Angeles art and to expand the creative network between artist, curator, and institution. Freeway Studies #2: Inside the Quad features the work of 31 contemporary artists whose studios are located within the borders of the I-405, 110, 10, and 105 freeways in Los Angeles. Over a six-month period Linton and Dawson visited nearly 100 artists working (and often living) in the designated area and each visit is documented on the project blog: http://blogs.otis.edu/freewaystudies/inside-the-quad/. They continue to update the blog as they visit more artists in the planning of subsequent Freeway Studies exhibitions focusing on other neighborhoods. Freeway Studies #2: Inside the Quad artists: Anna Ayeroff (‘07 Fine Arts) Juan Capistran (‘99 Fine Arts)* Miri Chais Brian Chambers Renée A.
