Invoking L.A. - A Group Exhibition Presented by Otis College of Art and Design
Can we still find spirituality in a world of pixels and sound bites?
LOS ANGELES – May 11, 2012 – Otis College of Art and Design is pleased to present the exhibition, Invoking LA, on view in the Bolsky Gallery, June 30 – August 29, 2012. A public reception takes place Saturday, June 30, 4-6pm.
Invoking LA, curated by artist Paige Tighe, ( ‘10 OTIS MFA Public Practice) presents the work of seven artists who use the fast-cut editing techniques and formats of reality TV shows, commercials, and music videos in an effort to summon the divine.
The editing techniques aid in creating a sort of trance-like space, in which sound, color, and action become shamanistic acts, such as: chanting prayers, priestess dances, and rituals of undetermined origin.
These artists aim to re-direct or focus the viewer’s attention out of the mainstream mire of media saturation and consumerism by subverting these fast-cut editing techniques and using them for the alternate purpose of raising the viewer’s consciousness to a higher plane.
Overlaying most of the work is a palpable despair, as the artists know they may not achieve transcendence, or be able to puncture the suffocating omnipresent media stream of distractions offered up by the corporate world. However, their message is hopeful as they explore and define their own brand of spirituality.
