MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JUNE, 2009 Media contact: Kathy MacPherson, galleryinfo@otis.edu, 310.665.6909 The Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design is pleased to present the exhibition: MARK DEAN VECA: Revenge of Phantasmagoria Instituto Cultural de Cabañas, Guadalajara, Mexico November 28, 2009 - January 10, 2010 Artist Mark Dean Veca is creating a site-specific painting installation called, Revenge of Phantasmagoria at the Instituto Cultural de Cabañas, Guadalajara, Mexico as part of the 2009 Guadalajara International Book Fair (Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara or FIL Guadalajara). The exhibition is on view November 28, 2009 through January 10, 2010 and is organized by the Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles and sponsored by The National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs for the City of Los Angeles, and the 2009 Guadalajara International Book Fair (Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara or FIL Guadalajara). Veca is renowned for creating paintings, drawings and installations that portray surreal cartoons, psychedelic landscapes, and pop culture iconography while also being inspired by long-established decorative motifs. The FIL is an ideal setting for Veca’s non-linear narrative style and the symbolism found in his work. He is able to bridge traditional painting techniques made famous by Mexican muralists with the improvisation and spontaneity of today’s graffiti artists. His recent exhibition at Otis’ Ben Maltz Gallery featured a large-scale painting based on a Katsushika Hokusai print from the 18th Century as well as a Toile de Jouy wallpaper pattern that included icons of Michelangelo’s Pieta paired with Popeye and Charlie the Tuna, Ganesh with Rodin’s Thinker, and the Lincoln Memorial flanked by Jeff Koon’s Bunnies. “It is my great honor to be representing the visual arts of Los Angeles at the 2009 Guadalajara International Book Fair,” says Mark Dean Veca. “To paint a mural at the Instituto Cultural Cabanas, literally in the shadow of José Clemente Orozco, is a dream come true.” (continued)
