Shahzia Sikander: Dissonance to Detour opens Saturday, September 24, 7-9pm at the Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design and is on view through November 12, 2005. The solo exhibition features new paintings, video animation, and a wall mural by the internationally acclaimed artist Shahzia Sikander and is curated by Meg Linton, Director of the Ben Maltz Gallery & Otis Public Programs. A catalogue documenting the project will be available late October 2005. Shahzia Sikander is the inaugural honoree of the Jennifer Howard Coleman Distinguished Lectureship and Residency. This program was created in partnership with The Samuel Goldwyn Foundation to honor the memory of Jennifer Howard Coleman, who was a talented artist and Otis alumna. The program highlights and recognizes prominent contemporary painters by awarding an annual residency and lectureship. Sikander is in residence at Otis from August 29 through October 3, 2005, where she is conducting a class with students in the Fine Arts Department. Sikander is giving two free public presentations about her work in the Otis Forum on Tuesday, September 6 at 10am; and on Thursday, September 29, 7:30pm. Sikander was born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1969. She rher BFA from the National College of Arts in Lahore (1where she studied traditional miniature painting. She received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Desiin Providence, RI (1995). Her work has been exhibited at numerous museums in the US and abroad including: WhitneyMuseum of American Art, NY; Hirshhorn Museum aSculpture Garden, DC; Museum of Modern Art, NY; and Arc/Musee D'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France.
