FOREWORD
Bird-Image and Symbol, the second exhibit developed
around a single theme is one of a series planned as an annual
event to be shown in the galleries of the Otis Art Institute.
The bird has inspired man since early times as a motif in dec-oration
and as a symbol representing such varied concepts as
peace, purity, wisdom, and evil. Gods and clemons of many
religions and beliefs have often been represented in bird form.
Feathers, bones, eggs, and skins of birds have provided the
raw materials for man's personal adornment, clothing, jewelry,
and utensils.
From postage stamps to savage garments; French tapestries to
pre-Columbian artifacts of clay and go ld; contemporary paint-ings
and sculpture to common everyday utensils, this exh ibit
demonstrates to some degree the variety in which the bird-inspired
motif has been used by many cultures in various media
throughout the world.
